What we do

The Sherwood Observatory Amateur Radio Club (SOARC) is the amateur radio group for members of Sherwood Observatory.

We provide a practical, hands-on environment where Observatory members can explore radio, electronics and communications, while also helping to deliver engaging outreach for visitors and the wider public.

Typical activities include:

  • Live HF and VHF/UHF operating
  • Digital/data modes operations and demonstrations
  • Portable / field operations (often led by individual members with proposals to co-locate with astronomy field trips too!)
  • Technical talks and show-and-tell sessions
  • Support for Observatory open events and visiting groups, especially within STEM subjects
  • Proposals to attend off site visits and events, including any opportunities to operate radio!

We are also going to be offering Amateur Radio Licence training initally within the Observatory membership. See the Training section for more details.

At this early stage, our priority is to build a core group of active Observatory members and then grow from there.
