Welcome to the Sherwood Observatory Amateur Radio Club (SOARC) – the amateur radio club of Sherwood Observatory in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire UK.
SOARC operates as part of the membership-led Sherwood Observatory, supporting its wider STEM aims and public engagement missions.
We are a relatively new amateur radio club at Sherwood Observatory, formed by members of the former Hucknall Rolls-Royce Amateur Radio Club and now a dedicated specialist group within the wider Observatory community. Our members come from all backgrounds but share a strong passion for amateur radio, with many bringing years of operating experience and deep technical knowledge that we put to good use in promoting the hobby at Sherwood Observatory. Among us are Full, Intermediate and Foundation licensees, but we also warmly welcome Observatory members who are simply curious about amateur radio and would like to begin their own radio journey with us.
We exist to:
- Promote amateur radio within the Observatory & wider community
- Support the Observatory’s STEM, education and public-engagement goals
We currently bring together Observatory members who are interested in:
- Amateur radio (HF, VHF, UHF)
- Digital modes and data
- Satellites and space communications
- STEM outreach and public demonstrations
We’d encourage you to explore Sherwood Observatory’s fantastic planetarium shows and events. The best place to find up-to-date information, book tickets, see what’s on, and find out about astronomy training courses is the main Observatory website at: http://www.sherwood-observatory.org.uk
