Our activities fall into two main strands: public-facing events that support the Observatory\u2019s STEM and outreach work, and member-focused sessions where we develop skills, stations and projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Public open events<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At many of Sherwood Observatory\u2019s public open events you\u2019ll find SOARC members on site running <strong>live amateur radio demonstrations<\/strong> from the grounds. Depending on conditions and the equipment in use, visitors may see and hear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HF and VHF\/UHF voice contacts with stations around the UK and Europe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Digital modes and data signals displayed and decoded on screen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coming soon: Satellite and space-related communications where practical<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our aim at these events is not just to \u201cbe on the air\u201d, but to <strong>explain what\u2019s going on<\/strong> \u2013 how signals travel, what modes are being used, and how amateur radio links into space science, astronomy and everyday technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interested in getting involved?<\/strong><br>If you\u2019d like to visit us at a Sherwood Observatory open event, find out more about what we do, or talk about training and getting on the air, please <strong>get in touch via the Contact page<\/strong> and we\u2019ll be happy to help. <strong>Attending open events are by pre-booked tickets only which are available when public events are announced on the Sherwood Observatory website: <a href=\"https:\/\/sherwood-observatory.org.uk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sherwood-observatory.org.uk\/\">https:\/\/sherwood-observatory.org.uk\/<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SOARC Member activities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind the scenes, we run a range of activities for Observatory SOARC members, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Operating sessions from the Observatory site<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Member talks and demonstrations on a range of amateur radio subjects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practical build and test sessions linked to our projects (such as the QO-100 ground station and hopefully soon our desire for a permanent shack set-up)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Opportunities to gain operating experience and confidence on HF, VHF\/UHF and digital modes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coming soon: Support for those working towards Foundation, Intermediate, and in time Full licences too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As our station facilities at Sherwood Observatory grow, we plan to expand this programme further with more structured <strong>training, workshops and focused project sessions<\/strong>, keeping amateur radio firmly embedded in the Observatory\u2019s STEM programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>To see what we\u2019ve been up to recently, have a look at our <strong>News<\/strong> page, and check the Sherwood Observatory website for details of upcoming public open evenings where SOARC may be operating.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SOARC is an active part of life at Sherwood Observatory.
